A good human hair wig is an investment. With the right routine, it stays soft, shiny and full for much longer. This guide shows you how to wash, condition, style and store your human hair wig, and which mistakes shorten its life.
Why human hair wigs need their own routine
Human hair wigs are made from real hair, so they look and move naturally and you can heat-style them. But the hair gets no natural oils from a scalp, so it can dry out faster than your own hair. Gentle washing, regular moisture and careful heat use keep it healthy.
How often to wash
- Every 7 to 10 wears, or every 2 to 3 weeks of regular wear.
- Sooner if you use a lot of product, sweat heavily or the hair feels heavy or dull.
- Curly textures like jerry curl, deep curl and water curl usually need refreshing between washes rather than more frequent washing.
How to wash a human hair wig, step by step
- Detangle first. Work from the ends up to the roots with a wide-tooth comb or your fingers. For curls, detangle only when damp and with conditioner.
- Rinse in cool or lukewarm water. Hot water can loosen knots and dry out the hair.
- Shampoo gently. Use a small amount of sulphate-free shampoo and smooth it downwards. Do not rub or twist the hair.
- Condition. Apply conditioner from mid-length to ends, keeping it away from the lace and knots. Leave it on for a few minutes, then rinse.
- Deep condition monthly. A moisturising mask once a month brings back softness.
- Blot, do not wring. Press out the water with a microfibre towel.
- Air dry on a wig stand. Let it dry naturally, away from direct sun.
Styling with heat
- Always use a heat protectant before flat irons, curlers or blow-dryers.
- Keep the heat low to medium and avoid passing over the same section many times.
- Let the hair dry fully before using hot tools.
- Give it rest days from heat to keep the hair strong.
Caring for curly human hair wigs
- Refresh curls with a spray of water and a little leave-in conditioner.
- Scrunch with your fingers instead of brushing.
- Avoid heavy oils and gels that weigh the curls down.

How to store your wig
- On a wig stand to keep its shape when you wear it often.
- In a satin or silk bag for longer storage, with the hair loosely folded.
- Away from heat, sun and damp, which can fade and dry the hair.
Mistakes that shorten your wig’s life
- Sleeping in the wig without a satin scarf or bonnet.
- Brushing curly hair when dry.
- Using hot water or harsh shampoos.
- Skipping heat protectant.
- Putting conditioner on the lace and knots.
Common questions
Can I colour my human hair wig? Yes, but go to a professional colourist. Lightening is harder on the hair, so deep conditioning afterwards is important.
Can I swim in my wig? It is best to avoid it. Chlorine and salt water dry out the hair. If the wig does get wet, rinse it with clean water and condition it as soon as you can.
How long does a human hair wig last? It depends on how often you wear it and how you care for it. With the routine above, a good unit lasts much longer than a fibre wig.
